Full Circle: Africa in Bloom

"Full Circle: Africa in Bloom" is a deeply meaningful piece created from the recycled scraps of my very first paper flower workshop in Philadelphia. This workshop brought together a group of 12 incredible women who experienced the art of paper flower sculpting using beautiful, African-inspired printed paper. The paper used in this piece is not just material; it’s a reflection of culture, heritage, and community.

The vibrant patterns on the paper immediately reminded me of my mother—her love for color and vibrancy, and the rich cultural heritage she passed down to me. My mother was a dedicated artist who held workshops to teach others the timeless art of beading and basketry, and following in her creative footsteps has always been a driving force behind my work.

This piece represents a full-circle moment in my creative journey, as I’ve taken the recycled scraps—fragments of stories, creativity, and community—and transformed them into the continent of Africa itself. The gold flakes incorporated into the artwork symbolize the many precious elements that Africa is known for, representing the richnessof the land and its deep-rooted connection to the earth and water. These gold accents evoke the wealth of natural resources and the cultural richness that Africa has contributed to the world—through its minerals, artistry, and spiritual connection to the land.

As I see the continent of Africa emerge from these scraps, I am reminded of the power of community, the intertwined relationship between culture, heritage, and nature, and the beauty that comes from embracing our roots. The gold flakes, which represent life-sustaining elements like water and soil, mirror the strength that comes from deep cultural and earthly connections. This piece is a tribute to my heritage, to the women who have shaped me, and to the undeniable link we share with the earth, water, and the rich history of Africa.
